I had not heard of this band from Norway before so had no special expectations or idea of what to expect. Myrkgrav are another one-man project coming from the land of black metal. «Trollskau, Skromt Og Kolabrenning» is a Det Germanske Folket production, so you at least know you can expect something interesting. Before everything, don’t let me scare you with the “one-man black metal act” label, “one-man-band” sounds quite negative to a lot of people (it often stands for crappy musicians playing simple repeated stuff because they lack the needed talent to compose and create). Most of those lonely musicians seem to think they can gain musical extremity (black metal) by lacking any talent whatsoever. This is absolutely not what we have to make here. Myrkgrav play very polished black metal with many Viking / pagan metal influences. Very Norwegian in sound and concept, the lyrics are also in Norwegian. Lars Jensen is a talented musician and composer, the complex (multi layered) song structures are excellently crafted and the use of keyboards is very effective (not boring at all, not constant but often enough to add a suitable Nordic feel). Very epic yet very cold, perfectly put together and flawlessly executed, Myrkgrav have set themselves a tough benchmark to try to surpass in their next full-length attempt. To sum up, Myrkgrav are a fantastic (unexpected) newcomer in the nowadays scene and I simply can’t get enough of this «Trollskau, Skromt Og Kolabrenning» at the moment. You need to hear this really.
